UK Wedding Insurance 2026

Do you need wedding insurance? What does it cover, how much does it cost, and when should you buy it? Everything UK couples need to know before booking their wedding.

Do You Need Wedding Insurance?

Wedding insurance is not legally required in the UK, but for any couple spending more than £5,000 on their wedding it is strongly recommended. The average UK wedding in 2026 costs between £18,000 and £32,000 — and almost all of that spend is exposed to risk without insurance in place.

Consider what happens if your venue closes unexpectedly, your caterer goes into administration two weeks before the day, or a key family member falls seriously ill and the wedding needs to be postponed. Without insurance, those costs fall entirely on you. With a policy costing £50 to £300, you are protected against the most common and most costly risks.

The question for most couples isn't whether to buy wedding insurance — it's when to buy it and which policy to choose.

What Does UK Wedding Insurance Cover?

Wedding insurance policies vary between providers but most comprehensive UK policies cover the following.

Cancellation & postponement Core cover

Covers the costs incurred if the wedding has to be cancelled or postponed due to illness, injury or death of the couple or close family members, or other circumstances beyond your control. This is typically the largest single element of a wedding insurance policy.

Venue failure Core cover

Covers costs if your venue cancels, closes unexpectedly or becomes unusable due to fire, flood or other damage. Also covers the additional costs of finding and booking a replacement venue at short notice.

Supplier failure Core cover

Covers financial loss if a wedding supplier — caterer, photographer, florist, band or other — fails to provide their service due to bankruptcy, administration or simply not turning up. Increasingly important given the number of wedding businesses that have closed in recent years.

Wedding attire Standard cover

Covers damage, loss or theft of wedding attire including the wedding dress, suits, bridesmaid dresses and accessories. Some policies cover damage during alterations and dry cleaning as well as on the wedding day itself.

Wedding rings Standard cover

Covers loss, theft or damage to wedding rings before and on the wedding day. Check the single item limit on your policy — some policies cap individual item claims at a set amount which may be below the cost of higher-value rings.

Wedding gifts Standard cover

Covers loss, theft or damage to wedding gifts received on the day. Usually subject to a maximum claim limit. Cash gifts are sometimes excluded or subject to a lower limit — check the policy wording carefully.

Public liability Standard cover

Covers legal liability if a guest is injured or property is damaged at your wedding. Some venues require couples to hold public liability insurance as a condition of booking. Most wedding insurance policies include £2 million of public liability cover as standard.

Adverse weather Check your policy

Some policies cover additional costs incurred due to severe adverse weather preventing the wedding from taking place as planned. This is more relevant for outdoor weddings and those in remote locations. Check whether your policy includes this and what the trigger conditions are.

Photographs & video Check your policy

Some policies cover the cost of restaging photographs or video if the original images are lost, corrupted or of unacceptable quality due to supplier error. Not included in all policies — worth checking if photography is a priority spend.

Honeymoon cancellation Optional add-on

Some wedding insurance policies include or offer honeymoon cancellation cover. However, standalone travel insurance for the honeymoon typically offers better and more comprehensive cover — compare both options before relying on your wedding policy for honeymoon protection.

What Wedding Insurance Does NOT Cover

Understanding the exclusions is as important as knowing what is covered. Most UK wedding insurance policies will not cover the following.

How Much Does Wedding Insurance Cost in the UK?

Wedding insurance premiums are based primarily on the total wedding spend and the level of cover required. Here are typical cost ranges for UK policies in 2026.

Basic cover £50 – £100

Covers weddings with a total spend of up to £10,000. Includes cancellation, supplier failure, attire and rings. Suitable for small weddings, registry office receptions and micro weddings.

Mid-range cover £100 – £175

Covers weddings with a total spend of £10,000 to £25,000. Includes all core cover plus public liability. Suitable for most average UK weddings of 60 to 100 guests.

Comprehensive cover £175 – £300

Covers weddings with a total spend of £25,000 to £50,000+. Includes all core cover, public liability, photographs, adverse weather and higher individual item limits. Suitable for larger weddings or those with significant individual supplier costs.

Cost vs risk Excellent value

A £150 policy protecting a £20,000 wedding represents 0.75% of total spend. By any measure this is exceptional value — the equivalent of insuring a car worth £20,000 for £150 per year.

When Should You Buy Wedding Insurance?

The single most important rule with wedding insurance is to buy it as early as possible — ideally on the same day you pay your first deposit.

Here is why timing matters so much:

When is it too late to buy wedding insurance?

Most insurers will sell you a policy up to and including the day before the wedding, but a policy purchased very close to the wedding date will have significant exclusions for anything that is already known or foreseeable. For practical purposes, if you are within four weeks of the wedding and have not yet purchased insurance, buy immediately — some cover is better than none.

Wedding Insurance FAQs

Do I need wedding insurance in the UK?

Wedding insurance is not legally required but is strongly recommended for any wedding with a total spend above £5,000. It protects your deposits and overall spend against venue cancellation, supplier failure, illness and other unforeseen circumstances. Given the average UK wedding costs £18,000 to £32,000, a policy costing £50 to £300 represents exceptional value.

How much does wedding insurance cost in the UK?

UK wedding insurance typically costs £50 to £300 depending on the level of cover and total wedding spend. Basic policies covering cancellation and supplier failure for weddings up to £10,000 start from around £50. Comprehensive policies covering weddings of £25,000 to £50,000 with public liability and higher item limits cost £175 to £300.

When should you buy wedding insurance?

Buy wedding insurance as soon as you pay your first deposit — ideally on the same day. The earlier you purchase, the more you are covered for. Policies purchased close to the wedding date may exclude pre-existing issues or already-known risks. There is no financial benefit to delaying — premiums do not decrease the closer you get to the wedding.

What does wedding insurance cover?

Most UK wedding insurance policies cover cancellation or postponement due to illness or bereavement, venue closure, supplier failure or bankruptcy, wedding attire damage or loss, wedding ring loss or theft, wedding gift loss or damage, and public liability. Some policies also cover adverse weather, photograph failure and honeymoon cancellation.

Does wedding insurance cover supplier cancellation?

Yes — supplier failure is one of the core elements of most UK wedding insurance policies. Cover typically includes financial loss if a supplier goes into administration or fails to provide their service. Some policies cover supplier failure for any reason while others only cover insolvency — check the policy wording carefully as this is an important distinction.

Can you get wedding insurance close to the wedding date?

Most insurers will sell you a policy up to the day before the wedding, but purchasing close to the date means pre-existing and foreseeable risks may be excluded. If you are within four to six weeks of your wedding and have not yet purchased insurance, buy a policy immediately — even partial cover is better than none. For full protection, purchase at the time of your first deposit.

Does wedding insurance cover COVID-19 cancellation?

Most UK wedding insurance policies now explicitly exclude cancellation due to pandemic-related restrictions following COVID-19. Some specialist policies may offer limited pandemic cover — check the exclusion clauses carefully before purchasing if this is a concern. General illness cover still applies for individual cases of COVID-19 preventing key people from attending, subject to policy terms.
